Douglass Defense Dominates in First Playoff Win

Freshman Dekel Crowdus Sprints Past General Defense

Frederick Douglass hosted Lafayette on Friday in the 6A KHSAA Football State Tournament.  With Lafayette having the 1st half momentum and 1st half lead, Douglass had to make some halftime adjustments.  That is exactly what the Broncos did.  The home team’s defense forced multiple 2nd half turnovers, didn’t give up a 2nd half point, and totally forced its will on the Generals.  Freshman Dekel Crowdus sprinted into the endzone three times in the 2nd half, and was chosen as the Prep Spin Player of the Game.  The last time the Generals and Broncos met, running back Jefferson Harkless ran 14 times 74 yards and a touchdown.  Last night, Harkless ran 24 times for 134 yards and a touchdown.

Juniors Gabe Hillyard and Xavier Fogle had fumble recoveries for the Broncos.  Sophomore captain Jalyin Bybee recorded an interception, as did Senior Damon Christopher.  The stout Douglass Defense had 9 tackles for loss, and two sacks.

Although the Broncos have already beaten Tates Creek in the regular season, the Broncos will travel to Tates Creek for Round 2 of the playoffs.  Tates Creek won its district, which gave it a higher seed over Frederick Douglass.  Creek’s district is made up of the Commodores, GRC, Madison Central, and Lafayette.
